A.A. History: Dr. Silkworth

Dr. Silkworth was the writer of the letters included in the chapter, "The Doctor's Opinion," in the front of the Big Book. He was instrumental in viewing alcoholism as an illness, rather than a moral failing, and became one of AA's greatest supporters. Silkworth treated Bill W. for alcoholism at Towns Hospital, over four visits, from 1933-34, the last of which occurred after Bill had met with Ebby. Bill W. described him as “the man we now realize was very much a founder of AA.”

Sponsorship Cafe: Sponsorship in Two Dimensions

Exploring the whole AA-through-Zoom concept led me to a person who told me he had never met his sponsor face-to-face. Say what? I had just gotten used to the idea that the AA message could be beautifully carried and shared through Zoom, but this seemed more than I could accept.

One of the things I love about our program is the occasional, sometimes not-so-gentle, whack on the side of the head that tells me I’m stuck in old thinking. Not necessarily bad thinking, just stodgy traditionalism...
