The purpose of Hospitals & Institutions Committee (H & I) is to carry the message of AA to alcoholics in Corrections and Treatment facilities and facilities serving alcoholics in Northern CA. Alameda County is served by Area 53, which is always looking for new volunteers.
How you can help:
Attend the H&I Monthly Business Meeting – Held the first Wednesday of the month 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm on Zoom

Whether you want to join the Area 53 Committee or be a volunteer for Hospitals and Institutions, you can start by going to the New Volunteer Business Meeting on Zoom. Attendance at the Business Meeting is required for H & I Service in any capacity (see positions below).

Contribute to H & I:
H & I is funded solely by your contributions. Pass the pink can at your AA meetings and announce the need for H & I collections. The money collected in the pink cans has enabled H&I to provide many millions of dollars’ worth of literature to confined alcoholics, giving access to AA’s life-saving message, and also provides funding for our committee’s activities.
H&I Service Opportunities include:
- Meeting Volunteers – Bring meetings into the many hospitals, recovery centers, detoxes and jails
- Speakers – Speak at a facility, sharing your own story
- Facility Coordinators – Organize the rosters for a particular meeting
- H & I Group Representatives – Serve as link between the local H & I committee and their Home Group
- Sponsorship at San Quentin – Provide sponsorship to inmates at San Quentin State Prison
