“I am responsible, when anyone, anywhere reaches out for help, I want the hand of A.A. always to be there. And for that: I am responsible.”

The Declaration was written for the occasion of the 1965 A.A. International Convention by Al S. Printed on wallet cards and in many A.A. pamphlets ever since, it has been quoted and recited innumerable times. Attempts have been made at least twice at General Service Conferences to change the wording of the Declaration to make it more specific to alcoholics and less inclusive, but the attempts have failed—largely because of the illogicality of trying to alter, retroactively, the historical event which transpired in Toronto at 10:25 p.m. on July 3, 1965. —From Silkworth.net

It will turn 60 on the first day of the 2025 A.A. International Conference in Vancouver.

Note: Originally called the Responsibility Declaration, it is more widely known today as the Responsibility Statement.
